Living the Fictional Dream

Erin M. Kinch’s musings upon the writing profession

Musings in the Middle of the Night

Last night, I woke up several times (not unusual — pregnancy is heck on the middle of the night bathroom runs — preparation for midnight feedings, perhaps?), and as I crawled back into bed and tried to coax sleep back into the room, I started imagining a story. The opening scene is there, fully formed, in my mind. I was too tired to get up and type it out last night (plus, my laptop battery was low), but I still remember it in detail this morning.

I will have to work on it on my lunch break today or maybe tonight when I get home. I need to get that opening written down before it eludes me.

Of course, once the opening is written, then I’ll actually have to figure out a plot for this story. I have a character, a setting, and a genre, but I’m not sure why in the world this girl is doing what she’s doing.

Isn’t writing fun? :-D

She’s doing what she’s doing because she wants to do it. Characters are like that sometim … most times. ;)

Be kind to yourself, Erin, during this time. I don’t mean don’t write or anything, I just mean make it fun. Let it happen. If you can chill about the process, the fact that you are pregnant will help you write. I know that probably sounds crazy but the times I was pregnant were some of the most productive I had. I believed in that and it worked for me. Enjoy the baby and enjoy the writing. Oh, and the dad too. You are more open now than ever. You go girl.

K.C. — That is so true!

Gay — That is such good advice. I probably do need to just relax about the whole thing. I keep feeling bad that I’m not getting the writing done as I used to. But, when I do get writing done, I’ve been a lot more happy with it than in the past. Relaxing would be good advice.
