The Dragon Thief
You are saved from another long ramble about characters by the fact that the June issue of Static Movement is available. This issue of the e-zine includes my short story, “The Dragon Thief” — the tale of a bookish young man, his heart’s desire, and a rather large dragon (what… you thought I was going to say poodle with a title like that?).
My writing group does a monthly prompt-writing contest, and one of the February 2008 prompts inspired this short piece. The prompt was to begin a story with, “The dragon took a deep breath and…” In my subsequent edits to the piece, I adjusted the beginning a bit. I believe this is my first prompts contest entry to be published, though I know other members of my group have done so.
After I finished the prompt, I found myself interested in Reggie the dragon thief. Part of me wonders what will happen to him next. A sequel perhaps? If something appropriately adventurous comes to mind, you never know!
And if you want to check out more of the fiction in this issue, here is a link to the June 2008 issue’s table of contents. I have yet to read any of the other stories, but I like the dragon in the cover art, even if the art is not based specifically on my story (that girl is definitely not Mehan). Perhaps there are more dragon stories within?
Enjoy reading “The Dragon Thief,” and, if you have time, leave me a comment here and let me know what you thought!

[...] has been a great week for me! “The Dragon Thief” was published, and I’ve had two more stories accepted — one by A Thousand Faces and one [...]
“The Dragon Thief” was an interesting story–or, maybe, a free-form poem. Mehan was definitely a shallow and self-centered young lady. Our hero can do much better than her–may she get what she deserves in a husband. My favorite character was the dragon.
I’m sure in 5 years, Mehan will be overweight and overburdened with kids, while Lance is blithely riding about the countryside having adventures, leaving her at home.
